Italy - Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum & Pompeii

On September 7th, I went to visit Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum & Pompeii with two new friends from the hostel.  What a long & tiring day of sightseeing.  I am now at the point where I don't want to see anymore museums & ruins for a while.

Mount Vesuvius
We started the day off by going up Mount Vesuvius.  The views from the crater were spectacular.  Check out the pictures from Mount Vesuvius below:

Herculaneum
Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town that was destroyed by volcanic flow from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.  Herculaneum is a fraction of the size of Pompeii and was a much wealthier community.  The preservation of the site was outstanding and we had so much access to many of the areas (compared to Pompeii where many of the sites are cordoned off).  If you have already seen Pompeii like I did on my first trip to Italy, I would highly recommend a visit to Herculaneum.  You won't be disappointed!  Here are some photos of the ruins:

Pompeii
I think most people know what happened at Pompeii - basically the same thing that happened at Herculaneum.  It was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.  Instead of being destroyed by lava flow though, Pompeii was buried under several meters of ash and pumice.  Here are a few photos from Pompeii:

 Sad :(

And happier times in Pompeii...

It's amazing to think that these remains are from 79 AD and earlier.  If it wasn't for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, all of this would not even exist today as it would have been torn down & demolished for newer buildings.  Blows my mind...79 AD.
